Winding Roads Of Orange County Ii

Sunday, January 14, 2018

A couple of months ago I finally joined the future and got a Garmin. (Actually, my old bike computer broke down and it turns out very few companies are making bike computers with an altimeter any longer because everyone is going to the Garmin – so I didn’t have much choice.) I’ve been downloading our bike routes into the Garmin each week and I love how it gives me warning beeps for each turn. I know our routes so well, I don’t often need the prompt, but it comes in handy when I’m not paying attention. It occurs to me that route prompts will really be helpful on today’s routes with all their twists and turns. Today’s long route winds around so much that it crosses itself about 4 times. The route map looks like a scribble on the map of Orange County. A good test for the Garmin’s navigation abilities. When you don’t have to worry about missing a turn, you are free to enjoy the beautiful riding Orange County has to offer on today’s routes. Both the long and medium hit all the same highlights including the Newport Hills and Turtle Rock areas. The only difference is that the long goes off and does an extra 20 mile loop in the middle and then rejoins the medium. There really isn’t a short route, so we’ll be using the short route from Winding Roads I. There isn’t a lot of climbing but there is a surprising little climb right before the end of the long and medium routes, so even when you are riding back toward the start across flat Irvine, keep something in the tank. Garmins warn you about the next turn, but they don’t warn you when a hill is coming up. START: PINE TREE PARK in TUSTIN. From Santa Ana Frwy (I-5) in Tustin, off and east on Redhill, L- Bryan one block to park. (Long 71 mi and 3300 ft, Medium 49 mi and 2100 ft, Short 32 mi and 900 ft)
