Giro 9 - Goss sprints to victory in Cava de' Tirreni

Vinokourov retains maglia rosa on wet day in Italy

Matthew Goss (Team HTC-Columbia) won a spirited sprint into Cava de' Tirreni, besting Italian champion Filippo Pozzato (Katusha) and Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Transitions) in the bunch gallop to the line.

Team Sky led under the flamme rouge, with Garmin-Transitions tucked in behind, but an attack by Rubens Bertogliati (Androni Giocattoli) disrupted the lead-out of the sprinters' teams. World champion Cadel Evans (BMC Racing), in an impressive display of strength, brought back Bertogliati and led-out the slightly uphill sprint in pursuit of valuable time bonus seconds available to the top three finishers. Evans, with Vinokourov on his wheel, was finally overtaken in the final 250m as Goss powered to a clear victory over Pozzato and Farrar. Goss became the third Australian rider to claim a stage at the 2010 Giro d'Italia, following Evans' and Matthew Lloyd's earlier triumphs.
